Doing The Right Thing

Source: sueunerman.com

The shortcut to happiness is lying. There’s no two ways about it. I even blogged about it the last month. Although most of us lie, not everyone is a good liar. What separates a good liar from the bad one is their body language and memory. I’m one of the bad liars.

A note crept toward her book. From the corner of her eyes, she could see the hand that was pushing the note. Simmi warily lifted her head from the book to take a look at the pusher, and promptly wished she hadn’t. The last couple of months had been hell for her and she wasn’t ready to speak to Arpit.

Almost daily she called up Darpan uncle because at some level she sympathized with him for having Arpit for a son. Headstrong, stubborn and stupid, if not self-centered. How could a father be happy with such a son?

Trying to understand Arpit was beyond her. She had accepted it and so she didn’t even want to try anymore. She just wanted to get on with her life. The first step was staying away from him during this semester. In the last semester, his drug stunt had caused her to lose her top ranking. Her embarrassment had been acute when she had passed the first semester with just a first class.

Smart Parents For Better Vacations

I lovvveeee kids. Well, that's an exaggeration. But yes, I love them. Usually. I mean, for at least 5 minutes. Or until they break out screaming and crying. Or until my head explodes listening them whine. Yes, I know what you are thinking. You must be thinking being a whiner myself, why can't I stand whining kids? Well, because I hate competition. I can whine and rant for hours. I don't need kids to overtake me in this race of whining.

Unfortunately, this sentiment of mine is not reflected by women of my age. I don't know about men because I haven't spoken to them about their kids. But women! Let me tell you this, they love their children but they love their freedom more.

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom called TrafficJamDom. The kingdom, which was sprawled over 500 km², harbored over 2 million carriages and wagons. Not to mention donkeys, mules and horses used by the citizens when traveling alone. The kingdom had population of more than 1.5 crores. It was a total nightmare for the king to handle the speedily rising population and the number of carriages and wagons.

Being Adventurous In Goa

Amazing Goa Beach

Well, being adventurous is easy and fun when you are young and fit. However, the matter takes an interesting turn when you are errr…..fat. There, I said it. Apart from having problems in fitting into normal-sized clothes, fat people are always scared of treading on someone’s toes because their kindness is directly proportional to their weight.

The same holds true for me.

Secret To Prosperity

Jowaki was sweaty and tired. She hated traveling, especially by bus. And to top it off, they were traveling to a remote village. She still couldn’t understand why she was being dragged! It wasn’t as if her relatives would miss her. She hadn’t met any relatives from her mother’s side in last 7 years when they had shifted from Gokulpur to Ahmedabad. Generally talking on phone was enough but as it was mom’s first cousin’s wedding, they had to visit.

Loved And Lost

Source: www.forwallpaper.com

Yes, I was different. Not that I liked different colours or different things. It was much more than that.

Being brought up in a typical Indian society, I was taught to cook and sew from childhood. Many times Sundays were spent in the company of mom learning how to pickle mangoes and how to roll out the perfect round roti. All this was done when I was internally dying to watch my favourite cartoon on TV.

I was even given good education in prestigious convent school. When I was in high school, my parents enrolled me in good tuition classes. They wanted me to score good marks. They wanted me to be perfect. A perfect cook, a perfect scholar, a perfect career woman, a perfect daughter, a perfect wife, and a perfect mother.

But I wasn’t perfect.

The Bigger The Better

Just the other day, my regular transport was out for service. I had to use public transport. Yup, the same dreaded transport service that has the capacity to make me break out in hives. That day I left home 30 minutes early because I had to catch the bus. As soon as I went to the bus stop, I started checking out the bus schedule board to see which bus would suit me the best. Boy, was I happy to see that the bus that was supposed to come in next 4 minutes was the best one because it would drop me right at the door step of my office building. Yes, right there! No walking 10-minute distance!!!

Hallelujah!!!

Simmi was tense as a high-strung horse. She feared she was going to snap anytime. She had never seen so much of hospital in all of her 18 years and now she can’t seem to avoid it. She knew she didn’t need to be there but she had promised uncle. She knew she wasn’t obligated to be there because she wasn’t Arpit’s friend but still she wanted to help. Although Darpan uncle was surrounded by relatives, it still seemed he was alone. Darpan uncle had already asked her several times to go home and rest but she felt guilty. For what, she didn’t know. Maybe it was something to do with Arpit taking care of her when she was hit by a ball. Or maybe it was because of the odd relationship she seemed to have with Arpit. Whatever it was, she had decided to stick throughout the whole thing, and she was going to do that.

Facebook Popularity! Really?!

Source: thenextweb.com

I don’t underestimate the power of social media platforms. Really. Being a content writer, I always say how crucial it’s for companies to leverage various social networking platforms to know and connect with their target audience. But hey, here I’m talking about our personal Facebook accounts. Normally, I wouldn’t blog about it but recently, my friend made me aware why I should take more care about my presence on Facebook.

His head was pounding. He wanted to lift his eyes but it seemed they were weighed down. He felt disoriented. He didn’t know where he is, what day it was, and where he was. He felt as if he was floating in some dark space. He could hear some beeping noises in the background. He wanted to move his hand just to know if he still had hands. But he couldn’t will his hands. His lips felt dry and parched. He wanted to lick his lips but couldn’t gather enough strength to do that.

The Art Of Lying

I never bothered to read Mark Twain. People who know me would understand it. But horrors of horrors, I read him few weeks back after I was urged by my friend. And much to my surprise, I read it with interest. Interest because it wasn’t some lame poem. It was an essay titled “On the Decay of the Art of Lying.” Believe me, I wasn’t looking for validation of my lying habit. In fact, I hate to lie. I confess I’m not a saint and so I have lied few times, and I’ve always felt horrible after doing so. I felt horrible for two main reasons: for having a runny mouth that tends to develop a brain of its own when I’m nervous, and for shedding ethics – ethics that I try hard to live by – for short-term gains or for being scared of saying truth.

More Than Reading

Many of you would already know that I love reading. It's not the matter of books. It's more the matter about magic. I like to read everything - be it books, magazines, newspapers or anything else. But when I read romantic fiction, I'm on cloud nine. Literally.

Last few months haven't been what I had ever expected. To put it simply, they were horrible but lovely in some aspects. Lovely because I got to learn about myself more. My goals became more clear to me.

Coming back to reading, in last few months I nearly read about 30-40 books. And most of them were romance. Yup, I confess a romance-novel addict. They are like my comfort food. My nirvana. If I'm down and out, I read romance. If I'm tired, I read romance. If I'm mad at someone, I read romance. And if I'm alive and breathing, I still romance. Wonderful genre, isn't it?

Life

Source: amandinevanray.deviantart.com
I'm writing something personal after a long period of time, and when I say long, it's really long like an year or something. Weird, isn't it? Does this mean my life has been on a standstill since last one year? Or is it simply the case of laziness that I stopped blogging about certain facets of my life? To be honest, I don't know. I don't even know whether I'm alive or dead. But let me assure you that it's not the ghost who's penning this blog post. I'm breathing, and that too without any help of devices or medication. The only thing is, I don't know what I'm doing. And I guess, that's what life is, isn't it?

"Have you sinned? Do you regret them? Do you want to atone?"

As soon as I read this sign board outside an astrologer, I wanted to burst out laughing. Of course I have sinned. Who can go through half a century of her life without sinning? But the question is, do I regret it? Of course not. I don't do regrets. In fact, if I find myself in the middle of the same situation, I'd do it all over again. However, I might do it with more finesse, more style and more enjoyment.

DovePlay: My First IndiMeet

Since the day I joined IndiBlogger, I’ve always heard about meets. Usually these meets are organized in metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Bangalore, being a hub of writers (or so I think), has also seen fair share of the meets. I live in Ahmedabad and so I had never ever thought of attending these meets. It was as good as wishing for the stars because being a working woman, I never thought I could take out the time to travel in train to the city where the meet was being held and spending thousands of bucks on the flight tickets never made sense to me. So imagine my surprise when IndiBlogger and Dove extended an exclusive invite to me for the meet!

Guest Post: The Princess and the Frog

I love reading fiction and there are few bloggers whom I read religiously. Karthik L, who blogs at Three Reams of the Mind, is one of those. So when he asked me if I would like to re-tell any fairy tale, I jumped at the chance. Literally. Read on my attempt and let me know what do you think of it.

A peek into the story

"What's so funny?" asked the disgruntled frog.

"Well, this is 21st century. Do you really want me to believe that witches exist? What do you take me for?"

"Then how many talking frogs have you encountered in your 21st century?"

Collateral Damage

Source: Wikipedia
According to Wikipedia, collateral damage is damage to things that are incidental to the intended target. This term is a military term and many times you must have heard it in political situations and in movies about war and politics. What’s more interesting about this term is, it happens to us in real life even when we are neither in politics nor in military.

Where the hell is Simi? Arpit wondered furiously. He had checked Simmi’s class, canteen and library but she was nowhere. He had sighted Kajal but she was in her basketball practice uniform and so he didn’t expect Simmi to be around her. He had already deduced that his Simmi was a mild person with no inclination toward any kind of sports, and he was thankful for that. He didn’t want her to be distracted by stupid games. She was fine as she was, but where was she?

Medium Size And The Lady

For the first time, a guest post is being featured on my blog, and the wonderful thing is, it's from my good friend Anunoy Samanta. I've known Anunoy for around a year now and it has always been fun to read his stories. Apart from being unique and creative, he always manages to incite laughter from his readers. Read on for a good chuckle.

The door bell rang at a critical moment and the chore remained unfinished. Truly said, nothing happens before its time. He wrapped up the towel again with thousand “whomsoever it may concern” curses and flashed water in the empty pan. An ill fated cockroach peeped out from under the folded toilet seat and took a gust of insecticide spray; after all, there had to be someone to take the first blow of fully dismayed Bholanath before the late morning visitor.

Even though two days had passed since Simmi’s unexpected meeting with the tennis ball, she still got blinding headaches. She had already been to her family doctor for the check-up, who had advised her bed rest for couple of days. And she had followed the doctor’s advice to the hilt; of course, it’s another matter that she didn’t have any other choice with constant headaches. Today was her first day in the college after that incident and she was enjoying it with relish. Who wanted to be stuck in a bed on such a wonderful day? With monsoon approaching sooner than later, the atmosphere was quite cool and cloudy. It looked as if it was going to rain anytime.

Smelly Encounters

Shade

Recently I visited Somnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlings. Before you start taking me as a religious person, let me clarify that I go to these places because my family loves to visit them and I like accompanying them. On our temple visiting spree - Somnath really has too many temples - I discovered one gem of a place. In a huge compound, there are multiple temples on one side and on the other, there was this beautiful tree surrounded by benches. Behind the trees, the sea inlet was flowing smoothly, blowing cool winds under the hot sun.

OMG! Who’s that guy? How come I haven’t seen him before? I’ve been working for this company since last 7 years and being the busy body that I am, I know all of the 230 employees. How did I miss this hotie? Holy hell, just look at his eyes! They were enough to make you swoon. I couldn’t resist my curiosity and asked Binita sitting beside me.

Arpit took a deep drag of cigarette and started blowing rings. Although they weren’t as good as LSD, he liked smoking cigarettes. Ah, that sweet feeling of being high on LSD, being in that other alternate universe where flowers bloom with inner beauty and chairs emit elegance of pure texture. The universe where distance and time didn’t matter, only being mattered. Just the thought of smoking LSD was enough to send Arpit in the reveries of ecstasy and frustration. However, due to shortage of cash, he had to settle for cigarettes. And he abhorred that.

Someone Special

Source: Wikipedia
The most beautiful thing about childhood is your mother’s pampering: her hugs when you fall down and skin your knees, her amused looks when you try to hide under the bed while playing hide and seek, her exasperation when you refuse to eat your lunch just because the vegetables are not cut the way you like. Unfortunately, this is not the case with the children of working mother. I’m one of those.

My Dream Vacation for 2014

Source: Openclipart.org

I love travelling. Be it in India or abroad. Unfortunately neither I’m Paris Hilton with millions of dollars in my trust fund nor am I a travel show host who goes around fantastic, eye-popping places at the expense of the producer! On the hindsight, I do think I chose the wrong career; I should’ve have gone for media journalism and should have tried my hand either with food shows or travel shows. Coming back to present, being a lowly-paid corporate slave, going to new places for vacations is my dream; and I try to fulfill my dream by taking one annual vacation. The destination of my vacation, however, depends on the number of leaves I have and amount of spare money on hand (which usually doesn’t amount to much!).

As days passed, Simmi started settling in the college life. She found an unlikely friendship with Kajal. Kajal, being an extrovert, got an avid audience, while Simmi got a peek into a different kind of lifestyle. Every facet of Kajal was fascinating for Simmi: her flamboyant style of dressing, laid-back style of talking, swinging-like walking. Simmi never thought Kajal would be so friendly with her but she really was. Even though Kajal had started making loads of friends – being active in sports and on party scene – she never ignored Simmi. In fact, she always made sure to include her. Sometimes Simmi even suspected that Kajal was treating her like her personal project but as she wasn’t sure, she never raised the issue. She didn’t want to end up with her foot in her mouth. A pattern was formed between Kajal and Simmi. They used to sit together and eat together. If Kajal wanted to bunk the lecture, she would bunk the lecture with her other friends. Simmi would stay back and attend the lecture, and Kajal would take the notes from her.

A Year-Long Journey

I’ve always been a restless soul, having no idea what I’m going to do very next moment. I’m always lost. The only thing that has anchored my life up to certain extent is reading. But it wasn’t enough. My fantasies were getting bigger and larger. I didn’t know what to do. But I had to do something. One day I gave in to my madness and penned down the first thought that came to my mind. My first post — Innocence — was the result. Writing it wasn’t enough. I wanted to be read but didn’t have any idea how to do that. At that time, one of my colleagues explained me how I could start blogging. Result : birth of Musings Of A Confused Gal (March 7, 2013).

My Hair Story

Hair! Every female frets about it. It's just that some admit it, some don't. I'm one of those who admit it. Openly. But most of the time, it's simply waste of time and energy because no amount of fretting is going to yield positive results.

I love long hair. Long and straight. When you have straight hair, it feels fantastic to try on new hairstyles. Bouncy layers remain bouncy, scattered layers look scattered and fringes look perfect. However, if you have wavy or curly hair like me, forget about hairstyles. No matter which hairstyle you choose, you will always have the same hairstyle.

I always had a dream to look like this:

But I always end up looking like this:

If you mean to tell me I should go to a good saloon using fancy hair products, I have done that. Short of going for hair straightening, I have tried it all. Let me tell you about my latest hair debacle. Recently my cousin got married, and I had serious plans for my hair. I was going to wear a saree with a sophisticated hair do. I wanted to look like this:

And I ended up looking like this:

The reason being? My hair refused to stay straight for the bun. It took 2 hours for the hairstylist to give me the look that I wanted and my hair took an hour to get their own way.

As I've been alive for decades, I've found enough time to ponder upon my hair. Being a management student, I've done a systematic research. Let's have a look at the research:

Current scenario:

  • Curly hair which looks same whether it's been cut by an expert stylist (who charged me a small fortune for it) or by me (very cost effective as I just hack my hair with kitchen scissors in the balcony. Don't ask me what my neighbors think of me when they see me doing it.)
  • Hair fall (As my hair grows, I tend to shed hair like a cat. I'm still trying to figure out if I'm a were-cat!)
Solutions tried:
  • Regular hair spa (Believe me, I have literally cried while paying for this. Had I invested this much money in real estate, I'd have made Donald Trump look like a puny)
  • Doctor treatments (Dermatologists don't do anything except robbing you blind. Their medications have never worked for me, nor I've seen it working for my friends. Mind you, I've visited more than one doctor)
  • Keep hair short (This works like magic. I don't lose hair when my hair are shoulder length.)
  • Using hair oil (I've tried all types of hair oil, including olive and home-made ones. I don't get anything except pimples, even on my hairline)
Conclusion:

After trying these many things for the hair I want, I've nearly given up. I think God wants me to be content with the lot that I've been dealt with. Consequently, many times I cut my hair on my own or go to a saloon if I want to be happy for a day or two. For hair fall, I keep on growing hair until the hair fall is manageable. The day I start worrying about the rate of hair fall, my scissors need exercise!

For You – I

She was sweating. Profusely. Her palms were wet and she dreaded dropping the book tightly held in her hands. She was already preparing for this day since weeks but still she was scared. She knew that her fear was unfounded, fallacious. But it still never stopped her from getting nervous. And Simmi guessed that she never would. She had started accepting this fear as a part of herself. A big part. Taking a deep breath, she entered her new college – Vidyanagar Arts and Commerce College. Today was her first day of the college. She knew most of the girls of her age were quite excited to enter college because it marked an end to long hours of slogging over study books and a start to freedom. A freedom to roam around with friends; a freedom to bunk lectures; a freedom to experiment new things. Simmi, however, wasn’t excited. And if the people who knew her got to know about it, they wouldn’t be surprised. Being the younger one of two daughters of Somnath Patel, Simmi was little bit introvert and sheltered. Her elder sister, Shalini, though was quite a fire cracker. Whenever any issues came up, Shalini handled it, and so Simmi never had to deal with anything more strenuous than studies.

Life is short

Usually I don't like quotes because somehow I find them preachy. For the same reason, I don't like reading auto biographies. I firmly believe each and every person is different, and no two people can feel the same things and can react in the same manner. If any one of you has ever read George Soros (the finance guy), you will know what I mean. However, few days back I was reading some article and there I found a beautiful para about life. As I couldn't find the original source of that work, I have reproduced the content that was written. If anyone of you is aware about whom to credit for this work, please let me know. Until then, enjoy this piece. I'm sure you will find good inspiration from it.

I look for you with hope in my eyes,
Longing for you to shower me with love,
Yearning to feel your warmth surround me,
Wishing for a shard of your bliss to enchant me.

For You

Source: happyhealthyhip.wordpress.com
Some of you might already know that I was writing Anything For You, a romantic story, for Storyinpieces.com. Unfortunately, the website closed down in the middle of the story due to certain reasons. However, I am not ready to let go of this story and so I am restarting it on my blog under the new title "For You". Even though the story line is same, there will be minor improvements in the story. I hope my readers will like it.
